Talking about and working with climate change

We are at a pivotal point in the history of time.

Some of the systems
that humans have created and that we have each, often unknowingly, sometimes knowingly, subscribed to, mean that we can’t continue business as usual. This will impact us all and yet it can be overwhelming to really connect with it. In fact it’s quite natural to want to intellectualize the problem or just do something. But if we want to think or act meaningfully, we need to have conversations that engage our heads, hands and hearts, bringing a generative balance between intellectual, action-oriented and emotional considerations. However, these conversations aren’t alway easy.

Climate psychology provides a bridge towards engagement. It’s concerned with:

  • our emotions – individual and collective - much of which are unacknowledged & unconscious

  • the social & mental processes that have contributed to the ecological and climate crisis

  • and our responses and processes of adaptation to it.

Climate psychology can help you by:

  • building understanding about why some people can’t or won’t engage.

  • building understanding of the dynamics of different groups and segments of societies.

  • offering you tried and tested frameworks and tools to engage and communicate with a variety of people more effectively.

  • developing strategies for transformation and adaptation to cope with the consequences of the climate and ecological crisis.

My work is underpinned by the latest psychological and behavioural economics research and best practices; my offerings include:

  • Climate workshops for leaders and leadership teams - to explore how they can rise to the challenges and lead themselves, their organisations and their teams through uncharted, uncertain waters. Workshops can be tailored specifically to your organisation or group’s needs, facilitating reflection and creative thinking that then translates into meaningful commitment and action.

  • Climate engagement keynotes and talks - to help you to understand people’s different responses to climate change, craft your messages and to communicate in a brain friendly way so that you engage rather than switch off or alienate audiences. Skilfull communication will help them to gain new perspectives, build personal commitment and create strong communities of action.

  • “Active Hope” workshops built on the “Work that Reconnects” - a series of experiences used all over the world that facilitate the building of individuals, communities and organisations into potent and resilient forces for positive change.

  • Climate coaching - for those working on climate and environmental issues, helping them to focus, lead and collaborate skillfully in uncertain times, to influence and engage others; for those who have had a painful "climate awakening" or are experiencing growing unease; and for activists and friends and family of activists. Visit the 1:1 coaching page here.

  • Citizens’ & People’s Assemblies - facilitated gatherings where people can learn about aspects of climate change, environmental damage & social justice, and explore how their organisation or community can respond, or can make recommendations, and more.

  • Climate Cafés - informal, lightly facilitated and confidential gatherings with listening circles for teams or groups, where people can share their thoughts and feelings, and listen to each other, without pressure to do something. Just being together is often enough.

I offer these talks and services both independently and through the Climate Psychology Alliance.

Linda has been very supportive of the work we are doing at CheltenhamZero. Her presentation about starting climate conversations was well received and we’ve had positive feedback from our members who valued her knowledge and experience in this field.
